San Diego’s Lost Neighborhoods
The San Diego History Center, in partnership with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art (SDAAMFA), is proud to present San Diego’s Lost Neighborhoods, opening September 25 at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park. This immersive exhibition sheds light on historic communities displaced or erased by discriminatory practices such as redlining and freeway construction.
Through augmented reality experiences, personal narratives, historic photographs, and archival materials, visitors can step into the daily lives of residents from neighborhoods including Julian, City Heights, the Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, Chollas View, Southcrest, and MLK Way. These stories reveal not only the human cost of displacement but also the resilience, culture, and community spirit that endured despite loss.
