Say Their Names…nyc Augmented Reality

Follow the instructions in the channel intro video to record yourself saying the names (Not available until Sept 17th)

The San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art (SDAAMFA) is pleased to present its first exhibit utilizing Augmented Reality technology. The “Say Their Names Memorial” is a nationwide, grassroots initiative honoring Blacks who lost their lives to acts of racism and/or injustice. The memorial began in Portland, Oregon and is an outgrowth of the protests that began nationwide in 2020. The informal outcry is now an organization called “Say Their Names Memorial” whose goal is to make sure that we never forget the victims and that we put a name to each face.

The original live exhibit was installed in San Diego and included 50 pillars which allowed us to display 200 individuals. Once the exhibit ended, Gaidi Finnie, Executive Director, SDAAMFA laid the framework for developing the infrastructure necessary for the Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Augmented Reality is described as an immersive digital experience in which digital objects are placed on top of real-world objects. Sincethe imagery that is placed on the real-world environs is augmented, the technology is referred to as augmented reality.

The New York exhibit opens from September 17, 2022, to October 17, 2022, in Central Park in the portion originally known as Seneca Village and closes. Seneca Village was a largely Black community that thrived from 1825 until 1855. The community was disrupted when the City of New York decided to acquire the property using eminent domain. Given its history, this is the logical location for this powerful exhibit. We remember the names of those who have tragically loss their lives to acts of racism. And we can make sure we never forget what happened to Seneca Village.

The NY memorial features a few hundred of the thousands of individuals who have died. The exhibit has been customized for New York by adding additional residents of New York including the Buffalo 10. SDAAMFA is pleased to bring such a meaningful exhibit to New York. We are hopeful that as you visit you will also think about something you can do to improve.

We apologize if you do not see a friend or family member who was lost to racist activities in this version of the exhibit. We encourage you to submit additional names to the national database being collected by the “Say Their Names Memorials” at the address https://www.saytheirnamesmemorials.com
